Our
activities can be classed at three levels:- Community Service, Fund
Raising and Club Social. Some activities are ongoing throughout the
year, others are annual events and yet others arise from requests made either
from within Lions or from members of the community asking for help. Space does
not allow us to cover every single one but we have tried to give a cross section
of what happens in a year.
Community Service
Environment
In
adopting Tusmore Park, The Club annually paints park furniture and
assists with the graffiti removal throughout the year. We have provided 4
electric BBQs for the benefit of the park patrons. We conduct a
clean-up annually in conjunction with KESAB on the first Sunday in March
which also involves members of the community
For
four years, we have conducted a re-planting programme for the Dashwood
Gully Reserve – the site of the former Council refuse dump. This year with
the help of community members, we completed the ground preparation and planting
of a further 400 trees
Donations to Underpriveleged
We
regularly donate good quality clothing and household utensils to persons
registered with Anglicare. Many of these goods are received as donations to our
regular ‘Garage Sale’ by members of the Burnside Community.
Each year, donation Christmas Trees are set up in the Burnside Council Chambers
and the Mall in Burnside Village and Christmas presents of Food and Gift parcels
are distributed though many charitable organisations.
Carols in the Park
Burnside Lions manage and run the annual Carols in Hazelwood Park on the
first Sunday each December. Joint Sponsors are the Burnside Council and the
Burnside Village Traders. From humble beginnings in Tusmore Park, this event
caters to over 5,500 people with strong support for the traditional
family based programme which involves choirs from local schools with the
backing of top professional Choir, Band and Artists. The local Burnside CFS unit
helps with a sausage sizzle and with the visit of Father Christmas. With
the help of volunteer drivers from the Burnside Community Centre, we are able to
bring some Senior Citizens to the Park to enjoy the Programme
Youth Services
Since 2006, we have assisted with the formation and ongoing programme of the
Marryatville High School Leo Club. This is a group of students from 12 yo to
18 yo who are learning to conduct their own service club. At the same time they
are introduced to the benefits of involvement in community service work. To date
they have visited an aged care home, collected some 700pairs of used eye glasses
for recycling to Africa, Bangladesh and other very disadvantaged areas of the
world.
Fund Raising
Monthly Garage Sale
On
the first Saturday of each month we sell the goods donated by the local
community and collected by our members in the time preceding the sale. Annually,
these sales raise near $15,000 and also provides members with many hours of
pleasure from the social interaction between both club members and the wider
community.
Catering
Apart from the number of events we cook BBQs as a service to another community
groups, we also undertake catering for large functions. We have for 10 years
catered for drivers and crew and later to spectators at the now familiar
“Classic Adelaide” Event.
Sales of Lions Products
Another major fundraiser throughout the year is the sale of Lions Cakes and Lion
Australia Mints.
SOCIAL ACTIVITIES
Monthly Dinner Meetings
The
fourth Tuesday meeting of each month is designated as a “social” night. Business
is limited to an absolute minimum of urgent topics that can not wait until the
“business” meeting. Lions are encouraged to bring partners, Family and Friends
to enjoy the evening. A guest speaker is invited to either inform us of a
current topic or to give us the pleasure of their experiences.
Outings for Family and Friends
These are generally casual events and have included, visits to the Live Theatre
& Cinema, Tennis Tournament, Weekend Camping or Dinner/Luncheon outings.
Thank you for visiting our Web site, and have a nice day
